Brain Injuries:

Cognitive skills training is not a new concept in the field of brain injury rehabilitation. Experimental programs were being developed in the late 1970's and clinical applications began emerging shortly thereafter in rehabilitation centers throughout the country. Unfortunately, at that time the practice of cognitive skills training was a bit ahead of our scientific understanding of how the brain functions.  It has taken several decades to refine our techniques, effectively learning how to promote neuroplasticity and meaningful cognitive development.

With the recent advances in the neurosciences (particularly neuro-imaging techniques), we have been able to study the physiological functioning of the brain in great detail; learning a tremendous amount about the neuropathology of many neurological, psychiatric and learning disorders.  Importantly, we have also learned a lot about a process called neuroplasticity.

Current research in the neurosciences has demonstrated that the brain is capable of making significant physiological and functional changes if stimulated in the proper way. While various programs directed at treating processing and cognitive disorders have resulted in improvement, much of the research had been inconsistent in both methods and results (often merely testing the cognitive impact of periodic brain games). Nonetheless, recent research has clearly demonstrated that neuroplasticity can be maximized if cognitive skills training tasks are structured properly. Consequently, it is now possible to promote significant and meaningful improvement in cognitive functioning in individuals who have suffered a brain injury.

The Brain Power® cognitive skills training program is the most comprehensive and sophisticated program currently available.  It is comprised of over 60 training modules in the areas of auditory processing, visual processing, visual motor skills, attention and concentration, impulse control, language processing, reasoning and memory. The auditory processing modules are also effective in treating articulation disorders.  Brain Power® is the only program available that provides the frequency, intensity, and duration of treatment required to maximize neuroplasticity and neurological development (daily 1-hour sessions, incrementally challenging, for 12 weeks).

While Brain Power® treatment is often "managed" directly by professionals in the field of brain injury rehabilitation (Locate a Brain Power Provider), the Brain Power® program's computer platform makes it  possible for a family member to provide cognitive skills training for the patient at home. This is important because there are often physical, financial, and insurance limitations that prevent intensive rehabilitation in a clinical setting.  Brain Power® is affordable, which allows treatment to be provided as long as the patient needs it. The Brain Power® cognitive skills training program is computerized, highly structured and user friendly. By completing our free video based Trainer Orientation program, a family member will be able to effectively provide the treatment a brain injured child or adult needs.

Note:  In order to create the patient's Brain Power® treatment plan, it is important to assess the patient's clinical needs.  In the case of brain injuries, there are often neuropsychological assessments that can help with planning.  If not available, we offer SymptomTrac; a free symptom-based assessment to assist with treatment planning.  Of course, when practical we recommend that Professional Administration be utilized to assist with assessment, treatment planning, and post-treatment assessment.  We are happy to help you evaluate your treatment options (Contact Us).
