Cognitive skills training is not a new concept in the field of brain injury rehabilitation. Experimental programs were being developed in the late 1970s and clinical application of these concepts and techniques began shortly thereafter in rehabilitation centers throughout the country. Unfortunately, the concept of cognitive skills training was ahead of the scientific understanding of how the brain functions and how to effectively promote neuroplasticity and meaningful functional recovery.
With the recent advances in the neurosciences, particularly neuroimaging techniques which have allowed us to study the physiological functioning of the brain in great detail, we have learned a tremendous amount about the neuropathology of many neurological, psychiatric and learning disorders, and about the process called neuroplasticity.
Current research in the neurosciences has demonstrated that the brain is capable of making significant physiological and functional changes if stimulated in the proper way. While various programs directed at treating processing and cognitive disorders have resulted in some improvement, the overall results have generally been inconsistent. However, recent research has demonstrated that neuroplasticity can be maximized if cognitive skills training tasks are structured properly. Consequently, it is now possible to promote significant and meaningful improvement in cognitive functioning in individuals who have suffered a brain injury.
The Brain Power® cognitive skills training program is the most comprehensive and sophisticated program currently available. It is comprised of over 50 training modules in the areas of auditory processing, visual processing, visual motor skills, attention and concentration, impulse control, language processing, reasoning and memory. The auditory processing modules are also effective in treating articulation disorders.
While Brain Power® treatment is best provided by professionals in the field of brain injury rehabilitation (Locate a Brain Power Provider) , Brain Power® makes it possible for a family member to provide cognitive skills training at home. This is important because there are often physical, financial, and insurance limitations that prevent intensive outpatient rehabilitation. Brain Power® is affordable, which allows treatment to be provided as long as the patient needs it. The Brain Power® cognitive skills training program is computerized, highly structured and user friendly. By completing our free Trainer Orientation program, a family member will be able to effectively provide the treatment a brain injured child or adult needs.
